Gemstone Lab
Saint Athena Gem Lab utilizes the latest equipment and industry-leading knowledge to test gemstones. We determine the type, quality, and authenticity of each gemstone. Our experienced team expertly tests and grades gemstones based on these parameters, generating detailed reports and certificates, which are always attached to your gemstone. We provide both digital and printed reports for easy verification. Below are the various parameters we test gemstones on.
- Visual Inspection: We inspect the gemstone based on visual appearance, including color, transparency, luster, and any visible inclusions or flaws.
- Refractive Index (RI) Testing: When light passes through the gemstone, some light is stopped and refracted by the gemstone, resulting in limited light emerging on the other side. The output of this light determines the gemstone's refractive index.
- Specific Gravity Testing: We compare the density of the gemstone material with the density of water. The detected specific gravity is specified in the gemstone identification report.
- Hardness Testing: This test determines the gemstone's resistance to scratching and abrasion. Different stones have varying materials, so their resistance levels differ, aiding in identification.
- Ultraviolet (UV) Light Testing: Similar to Refractive Index (RI) and Hardness testing, we pass ultraviolet rays through the gemstone. The way the gemstone interacts with UV light helps determine the UV test results.
- Polariscope Testing: This technique identifies strain patterns within the gemstone by analyzing how light passes through it.
Our Grading Scale
Gemstone grading is analysing and specification of a gemstone’s quality and providing a specific grade based on various criteria. With the help of this process we determine the value, rarity, and overall desirability of a gemstone. There are various factor on which we decided the grading factor and each factor our importance and specify individual properties.
- Color: By passing light through the gemstone and measuring the reflected intensity, we determine the purity and quality of the gemstone's color.
- Clarity: This property depends on internal and external flaws or inclusions within a gemstone. Gemstones with fewer or less visible inclusions are considered higher in clarity and are more valuable.
- Cut: This refers to the gemstone's shape, proportions, symmetry, and finish. Precise cutting is a complex process that significantly affects the gemstone’s overall appearance and value.
- Carat Weight: It's depend upon the size of the gemstone. Higher the size and greater the carat weight.
- Transparency: A gemstone that is pure and clear allows all light to pass through it.
- Origin: The origin means location from where the gemstone become produced.
- Treatments and Enhancements: Gemstone pass through the certain process so, that there is enhancement in color, clarity, or overall appearance.
